As a nurse or medical assistant in a doctor's office, you may be asked to assist the physician with minor surgery. This module provides a detailed overview of how to prepare for minor surgical procedures, correctly open the surgical instrument pack, and add required sterile instruments, while using a sterile technique. Including both Learn and Test modes, the online simulator offers two scenarios that test your ability to prepare for minor surgical procedures, specifically removing a mole and suturing a laceration. Practice the steps of the procedures as often as you want until you are confident. This module is based on the entry-level competencies for which the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) test the Medical Assistant.

You’ll learn

  • relevant medical terminology
  • the process for opening a sterile pack and creating a sterile field
  • the processes for transferring sterile instruments and for pouring sterile solution onto a sterile field
  • to visualize the “anatomy” of a surgical pack: what it looks like before and after opening, its contents, and an example of how these and additional instruments are laid out for the physician
  • to practice and perfect your skills in preparing for a minor surgical procedure
  • correct post-procedure, recording and reporting procedures
  • much more (see Content Details for more specific information)
